Bui Cong Khanh (Danang, b. 1972) is a Hoi An based Vietnamese artist whose visually and conceptually-sophisticated practice ponders social issues in Vietnam today. Khanh uses local Vietnamese materials such as ceramics, textile, and carved timber as covert clues to critical significance. In the 1990s, he was one of the first artists in Vietnam to gain an international reputation, through performances that questioned restrictions on individual expression in the Communist-controlled state. His practice has since embraced painting, sculpture, installation, video and drawing, and his work has been showcased across Southeast Asia and beyond. Khanh continues to explore his art through historical research and the fusing of the plastic arts with conceptual methods. He has exhibited at the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (Brisbane, 2009), Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (2013–2015) and Arter (Istanbul, 2014). His work is in major public collections in Asia, Australia, Europe and the United States.
