Vũ Dân Tân’s Hong Kong Dollars combine seductive aesthetics, paper money facsimile, wordplay, and the globally recognised Charlie Chaplin icon to engage audiences on social changes occurring not only in Vietnam, after the country’s 1986 doi moi reorientation of its centrally planned economy to a guided market system, but also around Asia. Moreover, Vũ Dân Tân, always interested in the world beyond Vietnam, was sensitive to the historical implications of Hong Kong’s return to China, his 1997 Hong Kong Dollars marking this event. This work, presented in Hong Kong for the first time at Art Basel HK, comprises fifteen distinct hand-coloured Hong Kong Dollars, other examples of this subset in institutional collections.
