Laurent Martin known as “Lo” creates mobile bamboo sculptures with tension and balance that become paintings in the air in a dance of shadows and movement.

Fascinated by the material he has spent the last 20 years in search of masters working with Bamboo the world over, learning techniques and in search of precious different species of Bamboo. He has honed his technique to be unique as a contemporary artist working in suspended mobiles or tabletop works that balance on a pin. He searches for the essence and spirit within each bamboo trunk, shaving them into ribbons that he deftly strings together with an almost invisible titanium threads and anchored with a ceramic ball. Lo was born in France and lives and works in Spain.

 

로랑 마틴 “로” (Laurent Martin “Lo”)의 대나무 모빌 조각 작품은 소재의 자유로운 곡선의 움직임과 그림자가 공중에서 만들어내는 자연스런 조화가 마치 입체화된 한 폭의 그림을 보는 듯한 신비함을 선사한다.

 

대나무라는 재료가 가진 힘과 유연성에 매료된 “로”는 지난 20여년간 전세계의 대나무와 함께 작업하는 대가들를 찾아 연마 기술을 마스터하며 다양한 종의 희귀한 대나무를 찾는 작업을 계속하여 왔다. 그의 이러한 소재를 향한 열정과 노력은 모빌 또는 핀 위에서 균형을 이루는 독창적인 형태의 현대미술 작품으로 승화된다.

 

작가는 각각의 대나무마다의 독특한 본질과 성질을 탐구하여 섬세한 리본형태로 가공하며 보이지 않는 티타늄 실을 이용해 세라믹 볼과 앵커링한다. Lo는 프랑스에서 태어나 현재 스페인에서 거주하며 작업하고 있다.

 

 

Wang Keping is one of the most regarded sculptors today. His wood carvings are deeply personal as he searches the being within his blocks of trees through its natural nooks, knots and branches that emerge through his guidance into women, couples, mother with child and figures. He is so in tune with his material that he calls it a collaboration of what the wood gives to him and how he allows it to guide his hand. Once complete he creates a chocolatey surface from burning and burnishing his works that gleam with a sensuality and tactility that ripples in luminosity. Wang Keping was born in China and moved to France in 1984 where he lives and works. He recently was invited to exhibit at the Musée Rodin and will have an exhibition at the Musée Guimet in November.

 

왕커핑은 현존하는 가장 존경받는 조각가 중 한 명이다. 그의 작품은 개인적인 경험을 바탕으로 한 인간과 관계에 대한 탐구의 결실로 각각의 나무에서 찾아볼 수 있는 엽흔, 매듭등의 자연스런 형태를 모티브로 여성, 커플, 어머니와 아이 등의 인물작품을 탄생시킨다.

 

나무는 작가의 작품세계의 영감의 원천이며 그는 작업과정을 일컬어 “나무가 나에게 제공하고 나무가 나의 손길을 받아들이는 협업”이라고 정의한다. 목재의 표면을 태우고 연마하는 수년간의 인고의 과정을 거쳐 작품은 아름다운 자연의 광채를 띄게 된다.

 

왕커핑은 중국에서 태어나 1984년 프랑스로 망명하였고 현재까지 프랑스에서 거주하며 작업하고 있다. 올해초 프랑스 로댕 미술관 (Musee Rodin)이 왕커핑 초대전을 개최하였고 2022년11월 기메 미술관 (Musee Guimet)에서 전시를 가질 예정이다.
