BUI CONG KHANH
b. 1972, Danang, Vietnam. Lives and works in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.Bui Cong Khanh’s work explores historical and contemporary issues in Vietnam. As one of the first local artist to gain international recognition during the 1990s, Khanh embraces painting and sculpture to express his fascination with the complex history of Vietnam. More recently, his works, such as the blue and white porcelain vases and the portrait of himself and Buddha, are reflective of the dichotomy of his fast changing nation. Deeply philosophical and reactive to the world around him, Khanh is one of Vietnam’s most intriguing young artists.

THE ROVING EYE
Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia
Curated by Iola Lenzi
17 September 2014–4 January 2015
From 17 September on, ARTER will host a large curated exhibition of Southeast Asian contemporary art for the first time in Turkey. Entitled “The Roving Eye: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia” and curated by researcher and critic Iola Lenzi, the exhibition will present 40 works by 36 of Southeast Asia’s most innovative contemporary artists from Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam and Malaysia.
As well as introducing forms, materials, conceptual methodologies, and aesthetic codes commonly featured in the artistic production of the region, the exhibition will offer critical insights into today’s regional culture and the many tensions cleaving the societies of Southeast Asia. In particular, The Roving Eye argues multiple points of view on self and society as a central canon of Southeast Asian contemporary art.
The Roving Eye will feature installations, videos, sound pieces, photography and performances, a number of which were especially commissioned for the exhibition. The exhibition will place particular emphasis on works that embrace experience, interactivity and participation.
