WANG KEPING
Wang Keping was one of the founders of the non-conformist artist group “The Stars” (Xing Xing), formed in 1979 during the post-Cultural Revolution “Beijing Spring”. This group of young avant-garde artists challenged the status quo and were pivotal in initiating some of the first free art expressions in the Post-Mao era bringing together like-minded artists such as Huang Rui and Ma Desheng. As one of France and China’s foremost sculptors, Wang Keping’s sculptures are an exploration of the human form. With a natural intuition of space and balance, they convey a highly sensual representation of the female body, of man and woman, mother and child. Wang Keping reveals the natural contours of the wood: the grain; knots; and flaws to evoke figurative representations in his work. Inspired in his early years by masters of European Modernist sculpture, his search today stems from Taoist ideas of simplicity and nature, material and the non-material, physical and spiritual, each piece defying definition.

Wang Keping is one of China's foremost sculptors. His work defies definition. Inspired in his early years by masters of European Modernist and African sculpture, his search today stems from Zen or Buddhist ideas of simplicity and nature, material and the non-material, physical and spiritual. Through his bestial erotic forms and swirling lines he works with a language of natural intuition of space and object, collaborating with his material and the secrets it has to reveal.

Wang Keping launches an entirely new series of works made out of iron in his current exhibition opening at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery in Central. The works entitled Eternal Smile is made to be set in a series of horizontal smiles or vertical smiles. They can be formed into endless walls, towers, floor installations or one-off pieces on the wall, or upon a podium.

As Wang Keping states, "The iron boxes from the Eternal Smile series is a breakthrough of my ongoing exploration of wood carving, it presents the same underlying idea with the use of a different medium. This is an extension or evolution of my work through a change of material, rather than a change of my relative direction."
26 May - 28 Aug, 2011
Since the Stars (XING XING, in Chinese) Exhibition of 1979 there have been many moments of struggle for artists in China. A struggle to express themselves through art during times of open attitude and times of closing, traditional thinking and changing times. This exhibition brings together 17 artists’ works that contribute to the ongoing discussion on artistic freedom and expression in China and beyond its borders.
