ATUL DODIYA IN CONVERSATION WITH ANNA DICKIE - OCULAXPRESSIONS OF REBELLION" - THE ECONOMIST, BY J.P.
18 Dec 2013
Read Atul Dodiya in conversation with Anna Dickie on Ocula online
Renowned Indian artist, Atul Dodiya recently opened his first solo exhibition at 10 Chancery Lane in Hong Kong. The exhibition, which is entitled Duplicator's Dilemma, takes places contemporaneously with the opening of an extensive survey of Dodiya’s work at the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi. Throughout his career, Dodiya has bought together and juxtaposed references from politics, art history and folklore for his work, as well as Indian and North American popular culture. He is probably best known for creating this amalgamation of visual imagery upon the metallic surface of shutter doors taken from Delhi shop fronts. The earliest shutter works were commissioned by the TATE Modern for its Century City exhibition, and now the latest iteration of this series appears in Hong Kong in the form of three large shutter works, which are contrasted beautifully with several delicate and poetic watercolours that also appear in the exhibition. Anna Dickie spoke to Atul Dodiya about his career, including what inspired him to become an artist, his passion for art history, and how his work reflects on India.

TEA TIME TALK & TOUR WITH KATIE DE TILLY - PARALLEL LIVES (CHAI WAN)
26 Jun 2013
Katie de Tilly will give a private talk and tour of Parallel Lives by Yang Zhichao and Douglas Young on Saturday 29th June at 3pm.
The exhibition Parallel Lives pairs two artists Douglas Young born in Hong kong and Yang Zhichao born in China in an amazing documentary exhibition at our brand new indoor / outdoor space.
More information:
Yang Zhichao was born in China in the year of the dragon 1964/1965 as was Hong Kong artist and designer Douglas Young who coincidentally shares the same name in Chinese: Yang Zhichao (楊志超). Parallel Lives explores a slice of history between two overlapping lives separated by a boarder of Hong Kong and China. Yang Zhichao spent four years collecting the personal notebooks of 3,000 individuals dating from 1949-1999. His series entitled, Chinese Bible covers 50 years of history within the writings of personal notebooks. Douglas Young is obsessed with Hong Kong’s recent past and collects objects from his lifetime that are now disappearing in the fast changing modernization of the city. The objects themselves are not antiques nor are valuable but they speak volumes about Hong Kong’s daily life in the past 50 years. Parallel Lives is an exhibition of collective memory by two very different artists who share a commonality of age and name as well as search yet have never met.
Saturday June 29th 2013, 3pm (open 11 am – 5pm)
3/F 305 Industrial Phase 1
60 Wing Tai Road
Chai Wan – Hong Kong
Tea time refreshments will be served
