Huang Rui is one of China’s most highly regarded artists and in 1979 was one of the pivotal protagonists of the first non-conformist art groups “The Stars Art Group.” Huang uses art to promote social ideologies and initiated some of the first free art expressions in the Post-Mao era.
With regards to his practice, Huang has been largely influenced by the Book of Changes (I-Ching or Yi Jing). Huang explores the reduction of pictorial elements in painting and the universal harmony of spaces.

Huang Rui presents a performance at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery Art Projects: Black and White Cats 49,Then?
27 Nov 2014
Chinese Artist Huang Rui will present a performance art work entitled Black and White Cats 49,Then? Inspired by the slogan by Deng Xiaoping, “It doesn’t matter if a cat is black or white as long as it catches mice.” Huang Rui will create a live action painting that is 15 meters long and 4 meters tall. The painting is divided into 50 sections. The painting represents the colors black and white to signify the Yin and Yang. Divided into sections of 7, Huang Rui will paint the bodies of 7 women and create rubbings onto the canvas with their bodies. They will first be painted white and then black, eventually the rubbings will become grey. The numbers have significance: 7 times 7 is 49. China was established in 1949. 49 further is an important number in Buddhism as it is said that when one dies it takes 49 days for rebirth. The Buddha, Siddhāttha contemplated for 49 days before reaching enlightenment. Hong Kong is now in the 17th year since the Handover from the British. Deng Xiaoping created the slogan: “One Country Two Systems, 50 years Unchanged.” While a third of the 50 years has been completed the One Country Two Systems idea has already been challenged. Huang Rui’s performance asks what comes after 49?

The Propeller Group and Christopher Myers, based between New York City, Los Angeles and Saigon, have encapsulated the elusive butterfly effect — the theory of "nonlocality” whereby two distinct phenomena affect one another across a vast expanse of space and time. The film, The Living Need Light, And The Dead Need Music, a phrase taken from a Vietnamese proverb, documents the funeral tradition of Saigon from the vantage of New Orleans: two cities, two cultures, mirroring each other from worlds apart.

Curated by Iola Lenzi
17 September 2014–4 January 2015
From 17 September on, ARTER will host a large curated exhibition of Southeast Asian contemporary art for the first time in Turkey. 28 Aug 2014
The 10th Gwangju Biennale: Burning Down the House explores the process of burning and transformation, a cycle of obliteration and renewal witnessed throughout history. Evident in aesthetics, historical events, and an increasingly rapid course of redundancy and renewal in commercial culture, the Biennale reflects on this process of, often violent, events of destruction or self-destruction―burning the home one occupies―followed by the promise of the new and the hope for change.
The exhibition is curated by Jessica Morgan, Artistic Director of the Gwangju Biennale and The Daskalopoulos Curator, International Art, Tate Modern. FatosUstek and Emiliano Valdes are Associate Curators for the Biennale, EnnaBae is Associate Curator for Performance and Teresa Kittler is Assistant Curator.

Starting in the 1970s, we follow the development of contemporary art beginning with groups of artists such as the No Name Group and the Stars Group, via the events on Tiananmen Square in 1989, up to the incredibly vibrant art scene of today. Comprising almost 80 works of various formats and mediums: painting, photography, sculpture, video, installation and performance, Right is Wrong presents a selection of seminal pieces by key figures in contemporary Chinese art history. DINH Q. LE: CROSSING THE FARTHER SHORE @ Rice Gallery, University of Texas
11 Apr 2014
Dinh Q. Lê is planning an ambitious, architectural installation of black and white photographic ephemera taken from the Vietnam War era, pre-1975. He has collected these photographs over the years that are often similar to the images that might fill a family’s photo album: portraits, scenic vistas, snapshots from events, etc. They are stitched together in monumental grids and paired with text handwritten on the back of the photographs. Specific recollections of the Vietnam War era have been chosen by Dinh Q. Lê from oral history interviews, including those conducted by Rice University’s Chao Center for Asian Studies with Houston’s Vietnamese community, the second largest outside of California. The large photo assemblages will be hung from the ceiling to create ethereal, cube-like structures inspired by the rectangular mosquito nets used in Vietnam. Dinh Q. Lê characterizes the gesture as a “sleeping, dreaming memory of Vietnam.”

DISRUPTED CHOREOGRAPHIES
19 Feb 2014
Disrupted Choreographies weaves eight contemporary voices from Vietnam who propose alternate narratives between colonial histories, collective behavior, systems of class and the crumbling of ideological thought.
This exhibition challenges the relationship between Vietnam and the ‘global’ stage, illustrating an artistic community critical of the historical consciousness that often stands in for its name (ie. the guilt of war; the tourist getaway; the nostalgic colonial).
The artists in this exhibition juxtapose historical event and social phenomena; relevant to the diasporic contexts they conceptually and physically traverse. Their dance in the residual space of failing ideologies, post-industrialized communities, heterotopias and the ramification of representation are careful artistic choreographies that they understand are in cyclical movement, ie. in repeat.
Participating artists: Lena Bui; Tiffany Chung; Dinh Q Lê; Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba; Nguyen Huy An; Nguyen Thai Tuan; Nguyen Trinh Thi and ‘The Propeller Group’

The Other Side: Chinese and Mexican Immigration to American: The exhibition presents a collection of visual narratives about the Chinese and Mexican immigrant experiences. Through the works of five contemporary artists, we explore the recurring issues of immigration, border relations and labor practices that have persisted throughout U.S. history and remain timely today. The selection of works demonstrates a range of different styles and references, spanning different historic periods, geographic locations, cultural influences and gender perspectives, bound together by the common threads of memory, history, identity and humanity. Artists featured include Zhi Lin, Hung Liu, Andrea Bowers, Tony de Los Reyes and Margarita Cabrera.

ATUL DODIYA IN CONVERSATION WITH ANNA DICKIE - OCULAXPRESSIONS OF REBELLION" - THE ECONOMIST, BY J.P.
18 Dec 2013
Read Atul Dodiya in conversation with Anna Dickie on Ocula online
Renowned Indian artist, Atul Dodiya recently opened his first solo exhibition at 10 Chancery Lane in Hong Kong. The exhibition, which is entitled Duplicator's Dilemma, takes places contemporaneously with the opening of an extensive survey of Dodiya’s work at the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi. Throughout his career, Dodiya has bought together and juxtaposed references from politics, art history and folklore for his work, as well as Indian and North American popular culture. He is probably best known for creating this amalgamation of visual imagery upon the metallic surface of shutter doors taken from Delhi shop fronts. The earliest shutter works were commissioned by the TATE Modern for its Century City exhibition, and now the latest iteration of this series appears in Hong Kong in the form of three large shutter works, which are contrasted beautifully with several delicate and poetic watercolours that also appear in the exhibition. Anna Dickie spoke to Atul Dodiya about his career, including what inspired him to become an artist, his passion for art history, and how his work reflects on India.

TEA TIME TALK & TOUR WITH KATIE DE TILLY - PARALLEL LIVES (CHAI WAN)
26 Jun 2013
Katie de Tilly will give a private talk and tour of Parallel Lives by Yang Zhichao and Douglas Young on Saturday 29th June at 3pm.
The exhibition Parallel Lives pairs two artists Douglas Young born in Hong kong and Yang Zhichao born in China in an amazing documentary exhibition at our brand new indoor / outdoor space.
More information:
Yang Zhichao was born in China in the year of the dragon 1964/1965 as was Hong Kong artist and designer Douglas Young who coincidentally shares the same name in Chinese: Yang Zhichao (楊志超). Parallel Lives explores a slice of history between two overlapping lives separated by a boarder of Hong Kong and China. Yang Zhichao spent four years collecting the personal notebooks of 3,000 individuals dating from 1949-1999. His series entitled, Chinese Bible covers 50 years of history within the writings of personal notebooks. Douglas Young is obsessed with Hong Kong’s recent past and collects objects from his lifetime that are now disappearing in the fast changing modernization of the city. The objects themselves are not antiques nor are valuable but they speak volumes about Hong Kong’s daily life in the past 50 years. Parallel Lives is an exhibition of collective memory by two very different artists who share a commonality of age and name as well as search yet have never met.

READ AN EXCERPT HIGHLIGHTING WANG KEPING BY CHRISTIE'S
01 Jan 2012
" Qi Baishi once mentioned, 'the wonder lies in the shade between likeness and unlikeness, bearing total resemblance is far too flattering while total abstraction is deceiving'. This idea inspired me strikingly in my opinion. Artistic creation rests not on theories, yet of course, my workers were immensely affected by the chinese philosophical aesthetics, and I was deeply rooted. I focus not on the form or the precise portrayal; whats really important is meaning itself. As the Chinese saying goes, 'everything can be left behind when you reach the gist, the mere form is unimportant.' "
