Influenced by Japanese animation, British artist Maya Hewitt creates paintings of fantastic or unreal dreamlike imagery upon canvases that may appear as if on a stage set. Her figures evoke the feelings of being in a state of inward contemplation, or uneasy inner monologues. Imbued with several narratives at once the characters are caught in illusory scenarios of both pop culture references and religious or superstitious beliefs. Her use of color is both uplifting and somber adding to the real and imaginary where unknown or indecipherable elements merge. She says, “I love how worlds can blend into each other, like how in dreams you can seamlessly move from different locations with out any logistical fuss.”
