Chan Dany, born in Prey Veng in 1984, currently lives and works in Phnom Penh. He graduated from Reyum Art School in 2005. His contemporary pieces employ a deep knowledge of Kbach Rachana, the ancient Khmer decorative forms characterized by organic shapes and patterns. Chan Dany creates delicate works using pencil shavings, which, when viewed from afar, appear to be embroidery. He meticulously applies spliced colored pencil shavings onto wooden board backings, transforming the discarded pieces from sharpened pencils into refined art.
By using these the pencil shavings, Chan Dany contemporizes traditional designs into shimmering and luminescent works of art, which will be showcased at Art Basel Hong Kong. His unique pieces attract an international audience who may not know their origins but can feel the resonant energy of Southeast Asian art through this unspoken language.
